Six Brands of Turmeric Seasoning Recalled For Containing Excessive Amounts of Lead
A New Jersey based company has issued a nationwide recall for several brands of ground turmeric. Excessive amounts of lead have been found in their spices, which is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, infants, and children. “Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ food inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by the New York State Food Laboratory revealed the elevated level of lead,” read the company’s July 28 recall notice in the FDA website. The company, Gel Spice Inc., is urging consumers to discard the product, which is packaged in 3.75 ounce jars, and has a UPC number of 81026-01230. The product also has the codes of “B/B 03/08/19” or “B/B 05/18/19” on the neck of the jars. The recalled spice was distributed to Big Lots Stores nationwide.
Another spice company, Oriental Packing Co. of Miami, FL, has also recalled several of its Turmeric and Curry brands due to lead levels. 377,000 pounds of various turmeric and curry powders sold under Blue Mountain (Amazon.com), Jamaica Choice, Ocho Rios, Oriental, and Grace (Walmart) brands have been recalled, as well as the brands they offer at Target. Turmeric is viewed by many as a natural supplement against cancer and other diseases. How the lead got into the spices has not yet been determined, but it is speculated that the plants used in the spices can absorb lead from the soil, or it could have been acquired during processing or deliberate adulteration to increase yield.
Lead can accumulate in the body over time, potentially causing delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies. Pregnant women, infants, and young children should especially avoid exposure to lead, and should consult a doctor if worried about blood lead levels.
